Retention is of paramount importance in any orthodontic treatment. I believe in providing high-quality retainers at the end of the orthodontic treatment to ensure optimum retention forever.
My standard protocol for ensuring absolute stability of the orthodontic outcome is providing patients with upper and lower clear thermoplastic vacuum formed retainers along with upper and lower fixed bonded retainer wires. The fixed retainers in upper and lower arches are typically bonded on the front 6 teeth and extend from the left canine to the right canine. In selected cases, where there is a higher relapse potential, the fixed retainer wire is bonded on the front 8 teeth and extends from the left first premolar to the right first premolar tooth.
The fixed retainer wire I typically provide is a customised laboratory made multi-strand stainless steel wire. As this is bonded on the inside surfaces of the upper and lower front teeth, it will be probably remain unnoticed by anyone other than your dentist.
